Mental health refers to a person’s overall psychological well-being. It includes the ability to manage one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in order to lead a fulfilling life. A person with good mental health is able to cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and make a contribution to their community. Mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, can negatively impact a person’s ability to function in these ways and may require treatment.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder characterized by persistent and recurring thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced as intrusive and unwanted, as well as by the individual’s attempts to neutralize these thoughts or reduce distress by performing repetitive behaviors or mental acts. These behaviors or mental acts are called compulsions.

The onset of OCD typically occurs in childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood, and the disorder affects both males and females. The exact cause of OCD is not known, but it is thought to involve a combination of genetic, neurobiological, and environmental factors.
